Accrual and Grant Models
Configure how leave is granted: as a lump sum, through accrual, or as a hybrid, with frequency, waiting periods, and tenure-based tiers.
Which grant models does Time-Out Zone support?
Time-Out Zone supports the common ways to grant paid time off, configurable per leave type. With lump-sum, the full annual allowance is granted at once, usually at the start of the year or on a work anniversary. With accrual, the balance grows gradually, for example each month or each pay period. A hybrid model combines both, such as a lump-sum for the statutory minimum plus accrual for additional days. On top of the model you can set a waiting period for new hires, choose an accrual frequency, and define tenure-based tiers so longer service grants more days. All calculations run automatically and update the balance in real time, so employees always see an accurate figure. The right choice depends on payout liability, administrative effort, and the employee experience you want. Many teams start simple with lump-sum and move to accrual or hybrid as policies mature.
Models you can configure
Each leave type can use its own model, so statutory leave, additional days, and special leave can behave differently.
- Lump-sum: full allowance available immediately.
- Accrual: balance grows across the year.
- Hybrid: a combination of both per leave type.
Fine controls
Additional settings tailor the model to your policy without maintaining special cases by hand.
- Accrual frequency, for example monthly or per pay period.
- Waiting period for new hires before the first grant.
- Tenure tiers that grant more days over time.
Real-time balances
Every grant, request, and approval updates the balance immediately. There are no spreadsheets and no nightly jobs that can drift out of sync.

Frequently asked questions
- Can each leave type use its own model?
- Yes. Model, frequency, waiting period, and tenure tiers are configured per leave type.
- What is the difference between accrual and lump-sum?
- With accrual, PTO builds up gradually across the year. With lump-sum, the full annual allowance is granted at once and is immediately available.
- Does the system support tenure-based tiers?
- Yes. You can define tiers so longer service grants more days. TODO: verify the exact tier configuration before publish.
